At the end of the 1970s the 65 hectares of the Oostvoorduinen were still earmarked as a housing development site. It is a very good thing that this could be prevented at the last minute, because this landscape is one of the early mediaeval headland dunes. Botanist consider the Oostvoorduinen to be an extremely interesting research area. They do warn of the extreme overgrowth of grass which should be curtailed with appropriate measures. Ther eare even lower dunes on the other side of the Nieuwpoortssteenweg.
